A bright ball of swirling light arrowed through the twilight skies overhead, and even the more experienced soldiers under Brina’s command gawped into the sky, shaking fingers pointing, a torrent of whispers all saying the same name.

Calene Alpenwood. Who else could it be?

Brina couldn’t pull her eyes from the surging sphere either, so could hardly blame her soldiers, but she had to lead. A support team made up of officers from the Haltveldian larger body, Sea’s Keep City Guard, the Shining Cross, Avastia, and the Followers of the Dawn surrounded her, each relaying her words to their people. Brina’s own herald, a young elf named Galo, and a Sparker named Fernan, who boasted several Links to others of his kind, made up the company.

And Nexes Almor. Her … advisor.

Most gave him a wide berth, and even she gazed at him askance. He stood statuesque by her side, dark circles ringing his eyes, and clad in gear of the same shade. Nexes spoke seldom, and when he did, he directed his words only to her. All the while, his emerald irises smouldered with the festering flames within, and he rarely pulled his stare from Brina’s direction, even with Calene Alpenwood flying overhead. His eyes flicked the floating Sparker’s way though, and he licked his lips before resuming his unrelenting study of Brina.

She shivered and turned the tremble into a roll of her shoulders.

A quick succession of detonations boomed in the dark north. Flashing lights, a multitude of hues, answered, glowing from inside the shadow. Lightning snaked across the dark sky, ringing Sea’s Keep with furious bolts of fulmination.

“Fernan, what’s the word from the Battle Mages?” Brina barked, turning away from Nexes. “Is this a full assault?”

The Sparker’s eyes glazed over, the panic from his face smoothing away before the placid mask gave way to grim determination.

“Not a full assault, not yet,” he shouted over the din. “But an attack from some two thousand of their number, aimed directly at our Sparkers. Maria’s forces are engaging with them, also. The Song the elves are capable of offers some protection, but the Confederacy mages are aiming their assault on the ground itself, summoning fire from beneath the earth.”

Brina’s core tightened. She pressed her hand against her stomach and swallowed. “And what about the sea—”

Fernan raised a hand, his eyes unfocusing once more. “Confederacy ships have moved out of the black veil. Some are facing down our vessels, and others are engaging with the incoming briggatas.”

“Thiemea!” Brina spun on the Avastian messenger, the one who would never let her out of their sight, the half elf by the name of Vira. “We told your people to break off and head south! Why aren’t they following orders?”

Vira tilted their chin. “Most did. Six briggata, commanded by the Dirachy, continued on to Sea’s Keep to provide relief. And to find Kalvhan.”

“That’s six briggata filled with dead soldiers we could have used! Get word to them. Tell them to break off and head south. Our own ships are going to punch a hole through any Confederacy vessels as soon as Sea’s Keep is empty.
